{"id":387,"date":"2005-07-12T07:02:35","date_gmt":"2005-07-12T07:02:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.docbug.com\/blog\/archives\/387"},"modified":"2005-07-12T07:02:35","modified_gmt":"2005-07-12T07:02:35","slug":"location-based-apps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.docbug.com\/blog\/archives\/387","title":{"rendered":"Location-based apps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The theme for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.almaden.ibm.com\/cs\/user\/npuc2005\/program.shtml\">NPUC<\/a> this year was <i>The future of portable computing<\/i>, so naturally there was a lot of talk about location-based applications. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.intel.com\/research\/exploratory\/i_smith.htm\">Ian Smith<\/a>&#8216;s talk on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.almaden.ibm.com\/cs\/user\/npuc2005\/bio.shtml#Ian\">social mobile computing<\/a> especially focused on using location. Personally I&#8217;m getting more and more skeptical about location-based apps. They&#8217;ve been right around the corner for a good decade now, and I&#8217;m starting to wonder if location-based apps are like video conferencing \u2014 something that sounds like it should be a hit but once they&#8217;re implemented nobody seems to care.<\/p>\n<p>That said, I think if there&#8217;s ever going to be a successful location-aware application (outside of the ubiquitous museum-tourguide app) it&#8217;ll be one that uses location as an excuse to socialize. I&#8217;m not sure whether the final winners will look more like <a href=\"http:\/\/dodgeball.com\/\">Dodgeball<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/\">GeoCaching<\/a>, moblogs, or a cross between <a href=\"http:\/\/livejournal.com\/\">LiveJournal<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oreillynet.com\/pub\/a\/network\/2005\/05\/10\/geospatialweb.html\">geospatial web<\/a> (or all of these), but I&#8217;m pretty confident that when you scratch the surface the real point won&#8217;t be <i>location<\/i>, it&#8217;ll be human-to-human interaction that just happens to use location as the medium.<\/p>\n<p>That also fits my general rule of thumb: The killer app is <i>always<\/i>  communications.
